When we talk about male anatomy, testicles, same as penis size, are a very important issue. No one wants to be tagged as small down there, even when they could be but, what if that is a problem and not just a size issue? What if your testicles are shrinking? Here we will explain why this could happen and what you could do to revert this situation.
Testicle size linked to testosterone levels
According to a recent study, larger testicles are linked with higher testosterone levels and sperm counts, as well as increased promiscuity and, in humans, marital breakdown and divorce.
The relative size of a man’s testicles may also influence the chances of him being a good father according to a study suggesting a biological basis for parenting abilities in men.
Men with larger testes are significantly less likely to display good parenting skills compared to men with smaller testes because of a well-established trade-off in evolution between mating and child-rearing, scientists said (1)
Testosterone in rapid decline
It is something not that hard to explain but: in human bodies, as we know, there´s two kind of hormones that give the sexual proper functions to male or female: testosterone and estrogen, respectively. In testosterone case, it is produced by testicles so, when the level of testosterone is low, the estrogen present in men´s body comes up and make the testicles shrink.

When men have too much estrogen, they’ll often grow breasts just like a woman, while their testicles waste away at the same time (2).
Small testicles may mean lower libido, lower sperm count
Doctors say that there is no connection between a man’s sexual drive and low sperm count. All men with lower sperm count are not likely to have lower libido due to lower testosterone.
“A man with a high libido or sex drive may suffer from low sperm count. The two aren’t connected,” said fertility expert Dr Sonia Malik in a job published on India Times (3)
Dr Tanya Buckshee Rohatgi, fertility expert from Max Hospital, India, says there appears to be a global decline in semen quality and a host of influences like environmental exposure, nutritional, behavioral, or genetic factors seemed to be the cause.
Dr Rohatgi also says men with low sperm counts are often advised to abstain from sex to improve their sperm count. However, new research suggests that too much abstinence can damage the DNA (genetic make up) of the sperm that is produced.
There´s several causes that could produce testicles shrinking, among them we could mention:
Exposure to too much aluminum may cause a low sperm count and infertility, and a side effect of smaller testicles. In a recent study, researchers examined 62 sperm samples and measured aluminum content, finding average of 339 parts per billion (high), with some men even having aluminum has high as 500 parts per billion. Those with the higher levels of aluminum were more likely to have low sperm counts and were therefore less fertile. Such exposure may lead to oxidative stress, in the testicles, causing cells to die, and the testicles to shrink (4).
Heat will definitely shrink the testes. In a study of rams, heat actually shrunk the testes by about a third by weight. This is particularly remarkable, because the rams were not subject to ultrahigh heat, but rather constant heat in the 28-23 degrees Celcius range (82-90 degrees Fahrenheit) continuously for two weeks (5).
A diet with a lack of nutrients and vitamins and plenty of carbohydrates could develop into aromatase dysorders. Aromatase resides in fat cells, so the more fat a man has on his body, the more estrogen it produces and it, as we said before, lead you into testicles shrinkage (6).
Stress and lack of sex
It is well known that stress can disrupt proper functioning of our endocrine. Not only can it throw our hormone balance off, it can also affect our reproductive organs in vicious ways. For men, high stress hormones and high cortisol levels reduce their testosterone levels, decrease hGH, and affect growth factors of erectile tissues that eventually lead to shrinkage of penis and testicles size (7)
If you introduce additional Testosterone into your body, your own supply is suppressed and the clearance rate increases. As a result, the testicles may take a vacation and actually shrink (8).
Ways to increase testicular size
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are rich in indoles, which boost testosterone production by breaking down and flushing the system of excess estrogen, which inhibits the production of male sex hormones. In one study, supplementing with indole-3-carbinol from cruciferous vegetables for just 7 days cut the estrogen hormone estradiol in half for men. Another study found indole supplementation significantly increased urinary excretion of estrogens (9)
A study from researchers at the University of Southern Denmark found an interesting correlation between a man’s quality of sleep and his testicle size. They surveyed almost 1,000 men about their sleep schedules, sleep interruptions, and sleep habits, and then tested their testicular sizes and sperm counts. They found that those men who reported insomnia, stayed up late, or slept inconsistently had sperm counts that were 29 percent lower. On top of that, their testicles were also 1.6 percent more deformed while also being smaller in size.
So, take a cup of warm milk with honey, forget about your problems and enjoy a wonderful night of sleep and keep your testicles size (10).
More sex/less masturbation
Testicle shrinkage (testicular atrophy) occurs when the testes, located inside the scrotum, diminish in size because of exhaustion from excessive masturbation and ejaculation. Diminished testicles are too accompanied by the loss of reproduction function, which can result in low sperm count or unhealthy sperm.
The severity of testicle shrinkage caused by over masturbation develops in stages. During the problematic stage, the sufferer experiences performance anxiety and weak erections. The severe stage finds him with back pain, while the addictive stage causes impotence. Finally, during the severely addictive stage, a male experiences all of the aforementioned symptoms, plus testicular shrinkage and groin and testicular pain (11).
